Planting & Care
USDA Hardiness Zones
Zones 3–8
Light
Full sun to part sun (At least 6 hours of sun for best flowering.)
Mature Size
Height: 30–36 inches
Width: 30–36 inches

36 inches apart
Planting Depth (Important)
Plant so the eyes sit no more than 1–2 inches below the soil surface.
Planting too deeply is the most common reason peonies fail to bloom.
Water Needs
Moderate. Water regularly during the first growing season to establish roots.
Garden Compatibility
Deer Resistance
Generally deer resistant once established.
Rabbit Resistance
Occasionally browsed when young.
Toxicity
Mildly toxic if ingested by pets or humans.
Common Planting Mistakes
• Planting the crown too deeply (prevents flowering)
• Expecting blooms in the first year
• Disturbing or moving plants unnecessarily once established
What to Expect After Planting
Peonies may take 1–2 seasons to fully settle in before producing abundant blooms. This is normal. Once established, ‘Duchess de Nemours’ can thrive for decades with minimal intervention.
