Phlox 'David'
PRE-ORDER: Ships approximately mid-April 2026
Phlox ‘David’ is one of those plants that carries a white garden through late summer. The blooms are crisp, luminous, and lightly fragrant, and this particular variety is known for better mildew resistance than many older phlox selections. When so many plants begin to fade in July and August, ‘David’ steps forward and holds the line.
This is not a plant that performs best as a single, isolated specimen. Phlox is meant to be planted in generous drifts, where the stems knit together and create that full, billowy effect you see in classic English borders. For that reason, we offer it in bundles — so you can plant it properly from the start and achieve the lush, cohesive look it deserves.
Your bare root plant will ship once our spring inventory arrives (expected early April). We carefully inspect and prepare each order prior to shipping to ensure strong, healthy plants. Orders ship in the order received. Because this is a pre-order item, shipping dates are estimates and may shift slightly based on supplier timing.

Planting & Care
USDA Hardiness Zones
Zones 4–8
Light
Full sun to part sun
(At least 6 hours of sun for best flowering and mildew resistance.)
Mature Size
Height: 36–48 inches
Width: 24–30 inches
Spacing
18–24 inches apart
(Plant closer for a fuller drift effect.)
Planting Depth (Important)
Position the crown so it sits 1–2 inches below soil level.
Planting too deeply can reduce vigor and delay growth.
Water Needs
Moderate. Water regularly during the first growing season to establish roots.
Garden Compatibility
Deer Resistance
Moderately deer resistant.
Rabbit Resistance
Generally not preferred, though young growth may be sampled.
Toxicity
Not considered toxic to humans or pets.
Common Planting Mistakes
• Planting too deep
• Planting as a single isolated specimen
• Poor air circulation (increases mildew risk)
• Letting soil dry excessively in the first season
What to Expect After Planting
Phlox establishes quickly and may bloom lightly in its first growing season. Expect fuller, more dramatic flowering in year two once the plant has settled into its space.
Shipping & Returns
Ships as a dormant bare-root plant during the appropriate seasonal window.
Bare roots are living plants in a dormant state and may not resemble potted nursery plants at time of arrival. Please review our Bare Root Plant FAQ before purchasing.
