Allium 'Mount Everest'

Allium stipitatum

Pre-order now

Allium 'Mount Everest' is a commanding ornamental onion producing large, perfectly rounded globes of crisp white flowers held atop tall, sturdy stems. Blooming in late spring to early summer, it bridges the gap between spring bulbs and summer perennials while adding striking architectural structure to the garden.

Each flower head is composed of hundreds of tiny star-shaped florets that shimmer in sunlight and attract bees, butterflies, and other beneficial pollinators. Rising above surrounding foliage, the blooms create a sense of rhythm and elegance whether planted in formal borders, naturalistic drifts, or contemporary landscapes.

Plant bulbs in full sun and well-drained soil. The strap-like foliage naturally fades as flowering begins, making it easy to conceal with neighboring perennials such as catmint, hardy geraniums, peonies, or ornamental grasses. The dried seed heads remain attractive long after flowering and may be left standing for additional seasonal interest.

One package contains 3 bulbs.

Growing Guide

Planting Depth

Plant bulbs 6–8 inches deep.

Germination

Not applicable. Bulbs produce shoots after planting.

Planting Time

Plant in autumn before the ground freezes.

Placement & Cultivation

Plant in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil. Allow foliage to mature naturally after flowering, as it replenishes the bulb for future blooms. Companion planting with emerging perennials helps disguise the naturally fading leaves.

Final Spacing

8–10 inches

Water Requirements

Moderate during active growth. Once dormant, bulbs prefer relatively dry conditions.

Soil pH

Neutral to slightly alkaline preferred.

Fertilizer

Incorporate compost or a balanced bulb fertilizer at planting. A light spring feeding encourages vigorous flowering.

Pests & Diseases

Generally very resistant to deer, rabbits, and rodents. Excellent drainage helps prevent bulb rot.

Cut Flower Use

Harvest stems once the flower heads have fully opened. Fresh blooms make outstanding cut flowers, and dried seed heads provide lasting architectural interest indoors.

Harvest & Garden Use

When to Plant

Plant bulbs in autumn once soil temperatures begin to cool but before the ground freezes.

Garden Performance

Provides dramatic vertical structure and serves as a natural transition between spring bulbs and summer perennials. Particularly effective planted in groups throughout borders for repeating architectural accents.

Cut Flower Quality

Exceptional for fresh arrangements and equally beautiful when dried. Seed heads remain ornamental in both the garden and floral designs.

White Garden Companions

Tulip 'Hakuun', Anemone 'The Bride', Galanthus 'Woronowii', Peony 'Duchess de Nemours', Phlox 'David', and Nepeta 'Walker's Low'.
