Bloom Sequence
Spring:
Hosta foliage emerges. Dicentra begins bloom. Aquilegia establishes early growth.
Early Summer:
Dicentra flowers fully. Aquilegia blooms. Digitalis begins rising into bloom.
Mid to Late Summer:
Digitalis reaches full height. Nigella flowers and softens open spaces.
Late Season:
Hosta foliage remains lush and structured as surrounding blooms fade.
What to Expect
Year 1:
Structure establishes. Seed-grown flowers provide vertical movement and seasonal bloom.
Year 2:
Dicentra increases in size. Hosta expands its footprint. Aquilegia and nigella may begin gentle self-seeding.
Year 3 and Beyond:
The bed develops density, repetition, and the layered woodland fullness that defines timeless white gardens.
Why This Design Works
• Anchored by long-lived structural perennials
• Planted in intentional odd-number groupings
• Layered for foliage and height variation
• Softened with seed-grown movement
White gardens succeed through structure and restraint. This collection gives you both.
Optional Structural Additions
For year-round presence, consider adding a nearby evergreen such as boxwood or yew.
For additional vertical softness, a white climbing hydrangea or shade-tolerant clematis pairs beautifully with this palette.
